Workshop on
“30 Years of Reform and Opening up and China’s Environmental Protection”
The year of 2008 is the 30 year anniversary of China’s reform and opening up. Since 1978, China’s social and economic development has achieved great success which draws worldwide attention. China has become the third largest economy in the world. From 1978 to 2007, China’s gross domestic product (GDP) has grown from RMB 364.5 billion to RMB 24.9529 trillion with per capita GDP increase of 48 folds; The rural extremely poor population has rapidly declines from more than 200 million to less than 20 million; The social democracy and legal system has increasingly improved; The country has witnessed a thriving situation in all walks of life.
In the past 30 years, along with the whole process of reform and opening up, China’s environmental protection undertaking has grown out of nothing from small to large, which has prevented China’s ecological environment from deterioration to be synchronized with the rapid economic development in the average annual growth rate of 9.6% for continuous 30 years. Now the comparatively complete environmental policy, law and regulation, and standard systems, and the environmental management structure have been established in China. The environmental awareness of the public and decision-makers at different levels has been increasing gradually. The decision making is shifting towards a science- and democracy-based process. China’s environmental protection undertaking is facing an unprecedented excellent situation.
To summarize the experiences and lessons learnt in China’s environmental protection, the Global Professional Association for China’s Environment (PACE) and the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences (CSES) in cooperation with the College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Peking University, the Chinese Academy of Environmental Planning, and the Research Center for Environmental Policies, Ministry of Environmental Protection are planning to organize a workshop on “30 Years of Reform and Opening up and China’s Environmental Protection”
The main themes of the workshop include, but not limit to:
l 30 year retrospect and outlook for China’s environmental protection
l Development, reform, and innovation of China’s environmental protection in the past 30 years
l Evolution and development of China’s environmental management structure and system in the past 30 years
l Resource and environment cost of the traditional economic growth model in the past 30 years
l Environmental protection and public participation
l Coordinated local and regional environmental protection and economic development in the past 30 years
l International cooperation for environmental protection and global environmental issues
The Global Professional Association for China’s Environment (PACE) and the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences (CSES) sincerely invite all those who are interested in China’s environmental protection and the themes of the workshop to attend the workshop!

8. There is no registration fee. Participants from outside of Beijing are responsible for the transportation and hotel room by themselves. Lunch will be provided at no charge.
